Sociologist Dr. Alexandra Manske explains »hybrid employment« as a sequential or synchronous combination of dependent and self-employed work, which for musicians often means sending invoices as a freelancer while holding a part-time job. It’s a relatively new phenomenon that began to falter right when the pandemic set in. In a talk hosted by journalist Jens Uthoff, Manske, Steffi von Kannemann – founder of the PR company Better Things – and Dena Zarrin aka musician MADANII will discuss the structure of the culture industry, the social hierarchies that develop due to economic structures, and how the crisis of the past year and a half has reinforced them. In short, it’s about how culture tries to transport anti-capitalist values while remaining caught in the clutches of capital. It is clear that structural solutions are needed. But what might they look like?
